┬áBorn at KGH in 1989, 22 years later I returned for my first time to have a double mastectomy. I discovered a golf ball sized tumour in my right breast. It was a cancer that doesn’t respond to chemo or radiation. I had two options. The first was a lumpectomy, with a chance of recurrence. The second was a mastectomy, with reconstruction.

Not wanting to worry about my future, I chose to have a double mastectomy for preventative and cosmetic reasons

The surgery was a success, although it did require many follow-ups. The expanders that were placed under my skin were filled in stages to create room for my actual implants. During this time, I attended a wonderful support group led by Patrice Dunbar, the plastic surgeon clinic nurse. Patrice is an absolute gift, her positive attitude and knowledge allowed me to feel comfortable with what I was going through.

The journey from finding the lump to reconstruction took a year, a year that taught me to appreciate life.

I am thankful for this experience. It has changed me; I now live my life finding the positive in everything.
