“Surgical robotics represents not merely a technological advancement, but a profound shift in how we approach patient care, recovery, and ultimately quality of life for our loved ones."
Dr. Joshua Wiesenthal, Urologic Surgeon, Kelowna General Hospital
WHY GIVE?
It’s Closer to home than you think…
Robotic-assisted surgery is fast-becoming becoming the gold standard in surgical care. Across Canada and the United States, top hospitals have already adopted this precision technology, ensuring their patients receive the very best in minimally invasive, highly reliable surgical care.
Here in British Columbia, with only two surgical robotic systems in the entire province—located in Vancouver and Victoria—we’re lagging behind. BC also has significantly fewer systems compared to provinces like Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Our loved ones deserve the same standard of excellence as those in neighbouring regions and communities have access too. Together, we will make it happen.
da Vinci is widely regarded as the gold standard for many complex minimally invasive surgeries.
As the region’s main referral hospital, acquiring the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at KGH will impact thousands of patients across the southern interior region—those facing cancer diagnoses, complex urologic or gynecologic conditions, and other health challenges that compromise quality of life. It will also position KGH as a destination for top surgical talent, ensuring that we continue to attract and retain the best and brightest medical professionals.
HOW WILL MY GIFT HAVE AN IMPACT?
The DaVinci Robotic Surgical System is the new benchmark in minimally invasive surgical care, offering unmatched precision and improved patient outcomes, particularly for certain types of procedures.
Donations to the KGH Foundation are a direct investment in the surgical care that is delivered at KGH in three key areas:
UROLOGICAL SURGERIES
UROLOGICAL SURGERIES
Particularly for prostatectomies, the da Vinci system is widely accepted as the gold standard due to its precision and improved patient outcomes (e.g., reduced blood loss, faster recovery, and better preservation of nerve function).
COLORECTAL & THORACIC SURGERIES

In complex anatomical regions, the enhanced dexterity and visualization offered by the DaVinci system make it a preferred method.
GYNECOLOGICAL SURGERY
GYNECOLOGICAL SURGERY
For procedures like hysterectomies and myomectomies, robotic-assisted surgery is often seen as a leading approach, especially for complex cases.

BREAST CANCER:
WIRELESS BREAST LOCALIZATION
Thanks to the generosity of KGH Foundation donors, we have been able to trial innovative technologies for breast cancer patients, such as Wireless Breast Localization. This novel approach reduces patient discomfort and improves patient experience. It can also enhance surgical accuracy and may reduce the need for additional surgeries. The impact of embracing innovation in cancer care is multi-faceted.

BLADDER CANCER:
BLUE LIGHT CYSTOSCOPY
“Blue Light Cystoscopy is a very powerful diagnostic tool that allows urologists to improve tumor detection for bladder cancer at the time of surgery, vastly and subsequently reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Previously, it was only available for bladder cancer patients residing in the Lower Mainland and Victoria. Now, thanks to the KGH Foundation’s donors, we have the capacity to perform this life-saving procedure right here at KGH.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
A gift to support innovation offers the benefit of unlocking a matching contribution from the Jim Pattison Foundation to support the Centre for Health System Learning & Innovation which will hold an important role in advancing this work.
Help us bring innovative solutions to cancer care in the Southern Interior and double your impact today.
In the face of cancer, every advancement, every innovation, and every act of generosity brings us closer to a world where cancer no longer defines the course of a person’s life. Advancing our hospital’s capacity to diagnose and treat cancers will not only save lives, but it will elevate care where it matters most – right here at home.
With your help, a healthier and brighter future is closer to home than you think.
Giving changes everything.
