3T MRI

The future of diagnostic imaging

“Every day, we see examples of how MRI is crucial for treatment planning, decision-making about what comes next in someone's care and following up to see if our treatments are effective. We are excited about the 3T MRI because we know that the technology will drive care forward and allow us to learn new things about brain diseases and how we treat them.”

Dr. Daryl Wile, KGH Neurologist (Clinical Lead)

3t MRI: The Gold Standard

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) utilizes magnets and radio waves to capture images of the body. A 3T MRI machine delivers twice the magnetic strength of a standard 1.5T MRI giving radiologists enhanced and more detailed images.

The province has approved funding for the acquisition of a 1.5T MRI for KGH. Recognizing the significant benefits of the faster 3T machine, the KGH Foundation is raising the $5 million needed to acquire the additional unit and help build the infrastructure to house it. It would be the only 3T MRI in the interior.

Your gift today will provide the critical funding needed to acquire 3T MRI in our community right now.

Clearer Images

Complex anatomies like the brain, and small parts of the body, like hands, wrists, feet and joints, are rendered with much more clarity and detail.

Faster Scans & Improved Comfort

A 3T MRI scans 2-3x faster, is significantly quieter, and allows for significant improvements in comfort (eliminates the need for an endo-rectal probe for prostate cancer and reduces the time cardiac patients are required to hold their breath).

More Accurate Diagnosis

3T MRI is especially superior in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological issues, brain tumours, strokes, aneurysms, abscesses, multiple sclerosis, prostate cancer and other conditions.

“The 3T MRI will help more than double our capacity, meaning people aren’t going to need to travel hundreds of kilometres to get a scan. In addition to being faster and producing incredibly detailed images, the 3T MRI will help us accommodate many different sizes of patients, helping to improve comfort and reduce the claustrophobia that some patients feel.”
